Summer Literacy & Accelerated Mathematics Academy

What is SLAM?

SLAM stands for Summer Literacy & Accelerated Mathematics. The purpose of SLAM is to develop mathematical and thinking skills that give students a head start in the school year to increase performance on achievement and assessment tests and accelerate their matriculation in the sequence to fulfill the A-G California State University and University of California admission requirements. SLAM prepares students for success in math and college readiness by teaching them to "LEARN HOW TO LEARN." This is the key concept to the SLAM framework because it allows students an opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning. Students are encouraged and prompted to engage in self-directed study while being challenged to take ownership of their educational endeavors. Students not only view school in a more empowered way, but they also provide academic support to each other, which in turn creates an intellectually rich learning environment.

SLAM offers a variety of motivational workshops for students - learning strategies, college success 101, race relations and more
