Collaborative Training Institute

Program Overview

The Collaborative Training Institute (CTI) operates within the Office of Pre-College Programs at San Jose State University. Pre-College Programs is an exemplary case of program collaboration among existing pre-college projects, local schools, and community organizations to serve low-income, underrepresented middle and high school students as a means of increasing their post secondary enrollment completion rates. CTI was established at San Jose State University in 1997 to enhance middle and high school student learning by facilitating the development and implementation of a "Service Learning Model" to train, involve and engage college students. Through intense formal and field training, college students become certified tutors through the College Reading and Learning Association.

CTI prepares tutors to work with middle and high school students at three levels:

  1. beginning
  2. advance
  3. master

The training emphasis is on analyzing and solving major tutorial issues. Critical analysis of selected topics is accomplished through role-plays, readings, videos, small group activities, and case studies. CTI certification is current for 5 years 2001-2006 in all the levels.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of these training sessions, participants will:
  • Explain basic terms, principles, and concepts involved with tutoring
  • Describe the learning environment in which tutorial activities are conducted
  • Analyze techniques used in tutoring
  • Evaluate interventions used in a tutoring session
